Photo safaris for butterflies, moth, and assorted creepy-crawlies usually involve scrambling around in long grass or stretching awkwardly across stuff with prickles. Finding rare or exquisitely beautiful subjects is the reward for all the effort. Putting up with the muscle strains, insect bites and scratches from brambles is the price of success.
Today was different. This is a moth I’ve never seen before, and I spotted it indoors resting on a wall. Cue a quick photo before it could flit off.
Its colouring and pattern makes superb camouflage OUTSIDE. Perching in vegetation or on tree bark it blends in so as to virtually disappear. Just think- if I hadn’t spotted it indoors, I might never have seen it at all. I know nothing about it: it’s probably common, but maybe I have discovered a rare visitor that will earn a plaque on the wall of the Natural History Museum. (I won’t hold my breath waiting!)
Sometimes in life we have to search exhaustively to discover some new thing or truth. At other times, revelation comes to us. We open our eyes… Surprise!
One biblical example that comes to mind is in Matthew 3:13-17 where John the Baptist encounters Jesus who asks John to baptise him. I imagine John’s surprise when he spotted Jesus on the riverbank- and then the revelation of a Voice and a Dove…
We never know who or what we may spot. But it could be deeply significant. What may God reveal today?
