Fireworks & Faithfulness- Look, See, Pray

Fireworks are used to mark important occasions or people. We set them off for New Year, or for civil or religious reasons. Not good for pets, but they satisfy the childish human desire for sparkles, bangs, and pretty lights.

I want to celebrate something special- a quite small but faithful church that is celebrating its centenary. 100 years of faithful worship and witness! There have been high points and low points (as in any church) but really what I am commending is that faithful persistence, “keeping on keeping on,” and in the process touching and changing the lives of individuals and the wider community.

Who knows how important these believers have been in the Kingdom of God? Only God has the big picture, but many thankful people have been blessed.

Faithfulness is the nature of God:  “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)

A foundational definition is found in Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.”

Faithfulness is about obedient service because of our trust in God, and our belief in the truth of the Good News of Jesus Christ. A congregation that exists for 100 years is a great testimony to the power and grace of the Lord working in and through these ordinary people. We should set off fireworks to celebrate faithfulness!

At this end of the hundred years, the church in Britain is sadly diminished. Congregations are often smaller than they were- although there are glorious exceptions. Faithfulness is a quality much needed today. One thing that has always reassured me in ministry is a bold statement by Jesus: “I will build my Church.” (Matthew 16:18)

Back to those fireworks- I think they should spell out a message of hope in the faithfulness of God. The verse I choose is this- John 14:1 – “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me.”

Past, present, future… all are held in the strong hands of Jesus, and He is faithful. Thanks be to God!
