It’s a bit early for ducklings this year- but they are one of the charming features of Spring. This family (flock? gaggle?) remind me of joys to come! Duck parents don’t have it easy. A procession of six to twelve tiny fluffs who, like all children, spend half their time pushing boundaries and the other half clinging on to Mum! Keeping an eye of all of them is a full-time job.
One of the loveliest sights is when the ducklings hitch a ride, or gather to hide under the adult wings.
Psalm 91 has a very similar image in mind:
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armour and protection.
Psalm 91 v4
There are times when all of us feel the need for safety, for protection from the harsher realities of our lives. Never be ashamed of the urge to scurry towards our Protector and Redeemer! Watch the little ducklings as they they squeak and tremble in the rush for the safest place- they are never turned away. It is where they are supposed to be.
Do you believe that God would turn you away in the time of need? Surely not! If ducks care enough for their offspring to put their own lives on the line, then so would the Lord… and as we approach Lent and Easter, we realise again that is exactly what Jesus did for us on the Cross. He gave His life, that we might be safe forever in His Presence. He IS faithful; and we are loved.
