Light of the World – and Some Geeky Physics

We’re off-piste again this week as I have been drafted in for an emergency intergen slot. (OK, not much of an emergency. What can I say? I live a quiet life.) So please find below a modern take on Jesus’ ‘you are the light of the world’ metaphor in Matt 5, and a wonderfully geeky appendix for those who, like me, cannot resist checking the figures in an internet meme.

Your liturgy resources are at the end, this time based on Mark 4 and that storm, y’know, the one with the cushion an’all.

Light of the World, All-Age talk

Light of the World Click here to download the PDF.

Use your phone to give a new twist to Jesus’ famous saying.

Great for an assembly, all-age slot, youth work, Messy Church or (shock, horror!) actual grown ups in an actual grown-up service – great for resetting attention in the middle of your (definitely stimulating and engaging) sermon.

PDF includes script for the all-age talk and a geeky appendix showing the maths (you’re welcome).

Click below for a video. Dunno why it won’t let me embed this week.

Liturgy Resources for 5th Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 7)

Mark 4:35-41

Confession and Absolution

Lord Jesus,
When you were asleep in the boat in the midst of the storm, your disciples woke you saying, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Forgive us, Lord, when we have failed to trust you.
Forgive us, Lord.

Forgive us when we have blamed you for faults that are in ourselves.
Forgive us, Lord.

Forgive us for thinking that you should answer prayer how we wish them to be answered.
Forgive us, Lord.

Jesus woke and rebuked the storm, saying, “Peace! Be still!” Then he said to his disciples, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Forgive our little faith, Lord. Forgive our small vision of you and our lack of vision. Plant peace in our hearts, grow fire in our bellies and open our eyes to see your glory, mercy, strength and love.
Amen.

God, who forgives all who truly repent, grant you new life in Christ and fill you with the awe of the disciples as they said to one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the waves obey him?”
Awesome Lord, we praise you.

Blessing and Dismissal

May you find trust in the storms of life,
may you hear the voice of one who commands the waves,
may you be filled with awe as you grow in faith
and the blessing …

Go with faith even as small as mustard seed
but faith in the one who commands the waves
and be not afraid.
Amen. We go.
