One of our local Facebook groups is having a problem with “anonymous” posters. Some people are complaining volubly about it. When the moderators asked why so many people wanted to keep their names “out of it” the leading reason was the level of abuse meted out by other members of the group. Sad, isn’t it? Bullies trying to mock or shout down anyone they disagree with.
I don’t blame the anonymous posters- but I’m quite upset by the rudeness of the bullies.
Society is funny, as in “ODD” not hilarious. On one hand we have “celebrities” and “influencers” who can’t get enough exposure; on the other we have those desperate not to be visible (and targetted).
Wouldn’t it be good if we learned how to listen and disagree- without anger or putting others down just because they differ?
It’s quite difficult to be different.
There are important differences, though. Sometimes we need to stand out from the crowd: issues of truth, honesty, faith, and justice. My photo is of “King Alfred” daffodils, pictured against a card of the complementary blue that makes the yellow “pop”. No distractions, no background mess: just blue. I picked the daffs and took them indoors to set up the shot to get maximum contrast (and therefore maximum effect).
I find it challenging to read what Jesus taught about being visible in order to be effective.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Gospel of Matthew, Ch.5 v16
To be anonymous in face of the need around us is really not an option. Christians who are as visible as these daffs risk comeback and criticism: but they also reflect the light to those who need to see. We should be different (in a good way!) and stand out from the crowd. It’s a way to bring beauty and goodness into our circle… and even make an impact on the way our society thinks and acts. Challenging- but just think what God can do when we take up the gauntlet.
