Tomorrow will have more light than today! Call me an optimist- but it is actually true! It may only be a minute or two, but we’ve passed the changeover point here in the northern hemisphere. Day by day we get through winter, and move towards the Spring. (Also, Christmas is a day closer! Yay!)
I’ve never been a fan of the long winter nights. Gloomy short days with dusk gathering at 4pm is not my favourite time of year. Even a small change for the better should be greeted with joy. Let’s face it, 2023 has been a year full of turbulence- and so hoping for a year filled with more grace and less anger has to be a positive thing.
Christmas itself should be an experience of joy and hope. Certainly, those who believe that the birth of Christ marks a huge change in history should be celebrating- or, if life is currently marked by grieving, then the coming of Jesus at least holds the hope of better days to come.
Others whose Christmas is no more than a few days of indulgence and partying should still find enjoyment: having a mid-winter celebration is no bad idea!
Here’s a thought worthy of a smile: there is going to be more light tomorrow.
If we choose, we can make that true in more ways than the purely literal. If we choose to be kind; if we share love, hope, and a smile; if we decide we will be agents of positive change- THEN THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE. As has been said, it is better to light a candle than to scream at the darkness.
As a Christian, I find the words of the Psalm sets this in a context where we acknowledge we build our hope on a solid foundation: God’s love never fails, and He is worthy of our trust.
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.”
