Seeds – Look, See, Pray

Free seeds! What gardener refuses the gift? My gardening magazine gives away packets of seeds quite regularly. Most of them are sitting in a storage box, waiting for me to have the time or garden space to try them out.

These sunflowers were the chosen ones. I didn’t grow very many, but they thrived, and produced these gloriously sunset-shaded blooms. The intense orangey-reds glowed against the dark shading of the border behind them, so the flowers stood out boldly and brightened my days.

It saddens me that some of the other free seed packets have never been opened. After all, seeds are pretty useless unless sown! Missed opportunities…

Quite often Christians ask “What can I do to serve God?” I think the best answer is another question: “What seeds has God given you?”

Those seeds are talents, skills, experience, and spiritual gifts/fruit. And when we sow from those seeds, flowers and fruit will grow- provided we recognise the opportunities that Christ puts our way. People we meet, circumstances shaping our options, sometimes a more direct instruction to plant and nurture seeds.

When we are willing to try, to move out in faith, to show love and compassion, we get Son-flowers. So, don’t leave the seeds “in the box” when they could transform life for us and others. Let’s shine with the Light we are given. These words from Psalm 84 are a statement of confidence in faith.

“For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” – Psalm 84 v11 NLT
