Surprise- Look, See, Pray

Our map suggested one small road “provided the snow is clear.” It was- just! We left the car and walked to the boundary rocks. Surprise! Beneath us, a precipitous cliff. Lifting our eyes gave us an incredible view across Yosemite Valley in California. One day later, we stood at the base of the big waterfall- that view offered a totally different perspective.

Nothing in the guidebooks had prepared us for such a dramatic vision. All the flowery phrases and dry prose failed to do justice either to the view looking down, or the view looking up.

Yosemite surely is a “little” piece of Heaven down on Earth. I can never forget the impact of this surprise view: it’s good to be humbled by something that is truly beyond our imagining and far beyond our grasp. Our place in the world is better understood when we are put in our place!

Writers have struggled for generations to express the awesomeness of God in comparison with our limited understanding of the eternal questions. Ponder this verse from the Psalms:

Psalm 147:5
"Great is our Lord and abundant in strength;
His understanding is infinite."

Lord, I am as nothing before You: but I thank and praise You for taking notice of our small humanity, and for reaching out to save and bless us in our search to know You and Your Ways. Truly, You are far greater than all of Creation: but You love and care for us always. Thanks be to God!
