How To Confuse A Cat – Look, See, Pray

This is our “not-our-cat” cat. He is about nine months old, and filling out to be quite a chunky boy. He regularly meets me when I return from the school run, and has appointed me as his trainer in hunting skills. We both have a good time! The grasses/palm leaves/pieces of string, not so much. He often follows me home and (sometimes) comes in to inspect the estate. NO feeding is involved because this is our “not-our-cat” cat. Catnapping by nefarious feeding would be wrong! But he is cute…

He is about to get very confused. The humans in his life are going to engage in mass lunacy and arbitrarily change his feeding times- and playtime. It’s the Spring Equinox and the clocks will change soon, springing forward one hour. But cats don’t have clocks, only appetites. He will have to adjust his schedule if he still intends to come out to play. (Paws for sympathy…)

Spare a thought for our confused pets.

Most of us humans will be fairly content once we adjust to the lost hour of sleep. Longer days, lighter evenings, and the weather is “improving” (i.e., warmer and sunnier). Perfect.

Will we make use of the extra hour of usable daylight? Can we find 15 minutes, morning or evening, to sit and look for the face of God? If we take the time, we may encounter God through scripture, or the “Book of Creation,” or through a daily interpretive dance (if that’s your spiritual thing!).

Because seeking God is the most important thing in our lives. So many things conspire to drag our attention away from the King and the Kingdom of God. Commuting, work, shopping, more work, coffee… all good in themselves, but secondary. Ancient advice from the Psalms:

I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.

Psalm 16 v8-10

The other way I could confuse my “not-our-cat” cat – read big books of theology to him! Somehow I think showing him love and attention is going to work better… which actually is how God likes us to spend time with Him. Love and attention aren’t confusing: they are a GOOD THING. Purrfect, really.
