Eyeballing a hoverfly… It’s an uneven match. I am vastly bigger; and the hoverfly has compound eyes – if you look closely you can see the multi-coloured refraction of light in the eyes-within-the-eyes.
And I’m hiding my “real eye” behind a camera lens so I can get a photo.
The eye has been described as the “window of the soul.” We prefer to look into a person’s eyes when we are communicating. I remember one time when my new specs didn’t have any anti-reflection coating; so when I preached or led worship, the congregation saw only the reflection of light off the glass. End result: the Treasurer offered to pay for new glasses with anti-reflection coatings, so that they could look me deep in the eyes when I spoke sincerely of a loving, holy God- whose delight was being reconciled to His People. They could see I meant every word.
Here is part of Psalm 33, which tells of the God who LOOKS and SEES… and LOVES. One day we will see Him face to face, eyeball to eyeball, and nothing will separate us from the Lord Almighty.
The Lord looks down from heaven
and sees the whole human race.
From his throne he observes
all who live on the earth.
He made their hearts,
so he understands everything they do.
The best-equipped army cannot save a king,
nor is great strength enough to save a warrior.
Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory—
for all its strength, it cannot save you.
But the Lord watches over those who fear him,
those who rely on his unfailing love.
He rescues them from death
and keeps them alive in times of famine.
We put our hope in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,
for our hope is in you alone.
Psalm 33 v13-22
Amen!
