Why is Easter so Hard?

Hello ‘Flectioneers,

having in the last six weeks completed a 3000-word essay on the history of interpretation of the (almost) sacrifice of Isaac (including Greek, Hebrew and a sassy little chiasm); finished the manuscript of my latest book and got that sent to the publisher; and written a 6000-worder on Bonhoeffer as the Luther of his Day, I finally have some time to devote to writing that doesn’t get marked. I’d say ‘Hooray’, but since we’re in Lent …

A quirky little resource for you today while I work on a long piece on the stations of the cross. Please make sure you are seated securely and have set down any hot beverages. I bring you the awesome majesty that is … the Calculate the Date of Easter Flowchart! Calculate the Date of Easter Flowchart (click words to download PDF, or right-click the image below for png)

Challenge the youth group – can they get the date quicker than the Sunday school (or clergy!) ?

Have a go yourself and see if the little grey cells are still working.

Use it as a one of the rounds of a church quiz night (you can check they’ve not cheated by asking for the values in certain boxes.)

Bung it in the church magazine – way more interesting than PCC minutes.

Pop round to your local synagogue and show it to the rabbi – you can have a good laugh together.

Jump in a time machine and go back to 325 and wave it at the Council of Nicaea – it’s all their fault, after all.

It works best if you do division by hand, so that you get the remainders. You can use a calculator, but that kinda makes it harder. And in case you are wondering, I have not made the flowchart difficult on purpose; it really is that complicated.

enjoy xx
