Wow! What a blockbuster set of readings today:
- The Ten Commandments (with Charlton Heston at the ready),
- Psalm 19 (cue Haydn “The hea-vens are tel-ling the gl-o-ry of God”),
- 1 Cor 1’s “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength,”
- and finishing up with Jesus kicking over the tables in the temple.
Phee-oo-eew! That’s a lot to get one’s teeth into. Let’s start with a recent sermon on Ex 20 that (would you believe?) got fan-mail, so feel free to pick apart as you may find useful. There’s also the printable rule of life hand out I mention, linked to Jesus’ summary of the Law in the Shema (Hear O Israel) in Mark 12 and Matthew 22. Click here to see a post about this.
Click here for a printable PDF – Rule of Life and below are some resources to go with the printable (I particularly recommend the Bible Project videos)
- My sermon on Exodus 20 1-20 that used the handy-dandy gizmo above
- Bible Project Shema – Love
- Bible Project Shema – Heart
- Bible Project Shema – Soul
- Bible Project Shema – Strength
- Ian Paul – How does Jesus summarise the Law in Mark 12?
- Together Apart – Intergen resoucres on Exodus 20
This week’s liturgy resources (below) are based on Psalm 19’s meditations of God’s law. You could think about these while eating bread with honey, honey from the comb.
What else do I have for you? Well, I’m working on a fab foldable for Easter Day, but that’s not ready yet, so you’ll have to curb your twitching fingers. Hopefully next week, but it’s half-term here in the sunny (?) UK, and I’m just off to see my youngest in Bugsy Malone, then I’m escaping to Paris for a couple of day to stuff myself silly on croissants and amuse the locals with my appalling French.
Check out last week’s post for the fabulous Yeggs and a bazillion games / family fun / community events you could have with them.
The Reflectionary is free because I believe this stuff is important, but I’m a self-employed writer and still need to make a living.
If you find these resources useful, please consider making a regular or one-off donation. Just £2 a month buys me a commentary in a year (and food in the meantime!)
Click here to Buy me a Coffee. Click here to donate via Paypal. Or send Colin Firth with diamonds. (Blow the diamonds, just send Colin Firth!)
But don’t worry if you can’t afford anything. You are very welcome to help yourself for free. Thank you for being part of the team.
Liturgy Resources for Lent 3
Psalm 19
Confession and Absolution
The law of the Lord is perfect. It gives us new strength.
Give us strength, O Lord.
The judgements of the Lord can be trusted. They make simple people wise.
Make us wise, O Lord.
The rules of the Lord are right. They give joy to our hearts.
Give us joy, O Lord
The commands of the Lord shine brightly. They give light to our minds.
Give us light, O Lord
Lord, forgive the faults we do not know
and keep us from the faults we do know
that we may be blameless in your sight.
Amen.
The commandments of the Lord are true and completely right.
They are more precious than gold, even than much pure gold.
They are sweeter than honey that comes from the honeycomb
And by them, we shall live.
Blessing and Dismissal
May the words of our mouth be pleasing to God,
May the thoughts of our hearts be pleasing also
To God, our Rock and our Redeemer.
And the blessing …
Go in the strength, wisdom and joy of God’s law
to live as children of his light.
Amen. We will walk.
