The Giant Leap… Look, See, Pray

“God has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart…”  (from Ecclesiastes 3 v11a)

Throughout human existence we have looked at the Sun, the stars, the Moon. We have wondered why, how, what, and Who.

Fifty years ago the scientists and engineers succeeded in reaching the surface of the Moon with a small capsule. I remember seeing the black-and-white TV images in the school hall. A momentous achievement. Isn’t it amazing what humanity can do with a big inspiring dream?

Deep in our being is a longing for knowledge, for experience, for the things beyond our grasp- out of this urge comes poetry, music, science, progress, theology.

What we see in our Universe rings a bell in our heart and inspires our longings.

Awe prompts a response: wonder, worship, activity, aspiration. We are truly “in the image of God” and whether we realise it or not, part of our being is always searching for explanations and meaning: surely life must have purpose…

Great faith and great science often stand together: if they seem opposed, it is only in the same sense that our thumb “opposes” our fingers- so we can better grasp reality.

The longing for God is inbuilt. The search for God is not impossible: He has revealed Love and Truth, and declared that human beings are precious. He does not abandon us.

There is a lovely passage in Psalm 139. As we read it and reflect on Man’s accomplishment to stand upon the Moon, may we see the grace of Almighty God as clearly as we see the Moon, the stars, the Sun. Light reveals Life; and life is nothing without Love.

Psalm 139:7-12 (NLT)
I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—
but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.
